Gerhardt continued to participate in solo and group exhibitions until the end of his life. In his last years these included the Ottawa Mini-print Biennale, a one-man show at the Office of Public Works Heritage Centre in Phoenix Park, Dublin and Ranelagh Arts Centre group exhibitions, including Intra Conti Irish /Italian paintings. He also showed regularly at Black Church Print Studios and at the Green Design Build Centre. In 2024, two weeks before his death, he attended the opening of his last group show, '5 Fine Art Printmakers' at the Mill, Dundrum.
In his last decade he was invited by Hettie Black to show a solo exhibition of etching and dry-point works at Barista's in Sandymount (2015). The following year, his and sculptor Liam Kelly's works were curated by Tony Strickland for an exhibition of oil painting and wood sculpture at the Sol Gallery, Dawson St., Dublin. He was invited to exhibit at the Enter into Art print exhibitions in Königswinter and Rhineland cities in 2106-18. Other venues in the same period included Impressions Print Biennial, Galway and the VUE Art Fairs at the RHA in 2017 and 2018. 2018 saw a sad start to the year for Gerhardt as his beloved wife and partner for many years, Miriam, the respected author and playwright, died on 15th January. Later, in September he had a very successful one-man show of oils and prints 'Ways and Byways ' during the Ranelagh Arts Festival in her memory.
His book 'Verbindungen - Connections: Irish/German Perspectives through Etching' (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2011), co- authored with Gisela Holfter and Micheal O'Haodha, continues to evoke interest. In the late 2010s, it gave rise to an intriguing e - correspondence on the works of his grandmother, Margarethe Gerhardt, a painter and etcher of the north German landscape, c1900-40, and another 'Gerhardt ' woman painter and etcher working in Germany in the same period. His 'Tall Ships' watercolours shown in 2011 at the Greyfriars Municipal Gallery, Waterford are now part of the Municipal collection, and one of his works featured in their Winterscape exhibition. In 2022 and 2023 Gerhardt's work was selected for the Royal Ulster Academy Annual Show, and he continued to experiment with paint, etching and drawing, particularly in Black church Print Studios, Temple Bar, where he was a dedicated and much-loved full time member, until the last days of his life.
